How to prolong the life of your British flowers

Top tips:

  • Use a clean vase - bacteria is the enemy of cut flowers

  • Trim the stem at a 45 degree angle (this increases the surface area for water take-up) before placing in fresh clean water

  • Remove all leaves that will sit below the water level

  • Change the water around every other day and trim the stem slightly. Bacterial growth in dirty water blocks the end of cut flower stems and then stops them taking up water. Give the vase a quick clean at the same time. This will significantly increase the vase life of your flowers

  • Don’t mix old flowers with new – there will be bacterial transfer and your new flowers won’t last as long.

  • Cut flowers last longer in a cool environment and so keep away from direct heat like radiators and choose a shady windowsill rather than one in direct sunlight.

  • Ethylene is a naturally occurring gas that promotes ripening and is given off by fruit and vegetables (particularly bananas) so best not to stand flowers next to your fruit bowl.
